For the past four years Sunderland Music Hub have hosted a Big Sing event each summer, working with schools to create a spectacular celebration of music. For the last two summers our event has taken place online and was streamed directly into schools, homes and other settings across the region.  

This year we are delivering a Big Festive Sing to spread some seasonal cheer! The event will see our Big Sing Band perform a range of songs that we invite you to learn and sing with us from the comfort of your own classroom. The event will be performed and recorded at Sunderland Empire and will be streamed via YouTube. You won’t be on camera so you can let loose with those dance moves, and we hope you’ll join us in wearing a festive jumper or Santa hat too!  

Anyone and everyone is welcome to join our Big Festive Sing – we’d love to have as many of you there with us sing festive classics across the city of Sunderland and beyond. Some of the songs will be very familiar, but don’t worry if some are new to you. We’ve included lyrics and learning tools within this toolkit to help you learn them. You’ll find lyrics, digital workshops, backing tracks and sheet music for each of the songs later in the pack.

Below we have created six separate videos and backing tracks to help you learn the songs featured in this year’s Big Festive Sing event.

You will also find a Digital Makaton workshop where you can learn some of the signs from each of the songs!

Within our event this year we will have a Makaton teacher who will sign along to each of the songs. We hope that children from across the city might get involved with learning some of the Makaton signs so that when you see the Makaton teacher on screen, children can join in by signing and singing from the classroom.

In this digital workshop you’ll learn signs to parts of each song. You might learn a chorus or a verse or some of the signs to lines that are repeated throughout the song. You can jump through the workshop to learn the signs to a specific song that you are learning in class that day.
