This year’s Big Sing is themed around wellbeing and it feels like, now more than ever, we need look after our mental health and wellbeing.

It is said that there are 5 steps to wellbeing and these are shown in the image below. The Big Sing and all of the supporting activities on this web page can help you through a few of these steps. For example, if you love to sing then you could take notice of this and sing more songs that bring you joy. Similarly, the Big Sing might be a new experience for you so why not join us for the event so we can embark on this digital learning together?

ABOUT OUR BIG SING

For the past few years, Sunderland Music Hub have hosted a Big Sing event working with local schools to create a spectacular celebration of music, with last year’s event taking place in Sunderland Empire with over 1500 young people. Due to the current situation and temporary closure of schools, this year, instead of cancelling the event, we have decided to embrace technology and host it online, live streaming it directly to you in the comfort of your own home.

Sing along with us to a selection of well-known songs focused around wellbeing. Our singers will be live, supported by our fantastic band so you can sing along with us at home (don’t worry, you won’t be on camera so you can let loose and add in some dance moves too).

Anyone and everyone is welcome to join us for the Big Sing – we’d love to have as many of you there with us as possible!

Our event will be on Monday 22nd June 2020 at 1.00pm. more details to follow.

For more information on the event and how to get involved, check out our Big Sing 2020 Resource Pack below.

We are working with some amazing musicians to develop a toolkit for you that teaches you each of the songs featured in our event, along with a few extra activities to do, just for fun.

This toolkit is made up of six songs, with one song released each Monday in the lead up to our Big Sing live streamed event starting from Monday 4 May 2020. Each item in the toolkit will be listed below.

WEEK ONE – Don’t Worry, Be Happy

Below you’ll find our first “how to” video with the lovely Laura teaching you how to sing along to Don’t Worry, Be Happy. Remember the lyrics are included in our Big Sing 2020 Resource Pack above!

You can access the performance track on the SingUp website here https://www.singup.org/singupathome/songs-for-virtual-choirs/part-songs

Have fun!

The next video will be released on Monday 11 May – watch this space!

As well as learning the songs, you might like to have a look at the activities below and try the one that links to the song you are learning.

Week 1: Don’t Worry Be Happy – Additional activity

Why not compose your own body percussion patterns to accompany the song? How many sounds can you make with your hands and which ones are the most effective? You could use clapping, clicking and tapping to create some really interesting textures.

WEEK TWO: Count on Me

This week we have the lovely Ashleigh leading you through our next song – Count On Me. This “how to” video will be available from 1pm on Monday 11 May 2020.

All of the lyrics are included in our resource pack (link above) and you can find the performance track here on the SingUp website https://www.singup.org/singupathome/songs-for-virtual-choirs/part-songs

Below are a couple of activities that you might like to try at home alongside the song you are learning.

Week 2: Count On Me – Additional activity

Count on me is about the true meaning of friendship. You could display the words and talk about what the song’s central message means to be a good friend, think about the things that you do and think about ways to extend the hand of friendship.

Then write a letter to one of your friends and make them feel really good by complimenting them on all their good qualities and telling them why you miss them.

Little acts of kindness can have a great impact, sending a letter/picture/card to friends and family, letting them know you’re thinking of them, can have a huge effect.

There’s a brilliant worldwide postcard scheme too via www.postcrossing.com exchanging greetings with people around the globe.

Week 3: One and a Million – Additional activity

What makes you one and a million? Talk with your family about yourself and what you think makes you special. Ask them what they think makes you special. Then tell them what makes them special. Write down your ideas then work together to write a poem or draw a picture about your family.

Week 4: Keep me Warm – Additional activity

Why don’t you think about making a leaflet or poster containing information about things that people can do to make themselves feel good – think about what makes you smile and what make you feel safe. Use these as a starting point for your leaflet. Then give it to someone in your house to try.

WEEK FIVE: Something Inside (So Strong)

And just like that we’re into June. With only 3 more weeks to go until our event, this week we’re looking at the song Something Inside (So Strong). Create a piece of artwork that you think sends a really positive message. Think about the colours that you could use to represent emotions and choose some symbols to represent strength. There are some great lyrics in this song that you could incorporate into your art:

‘The more you refuse to hear my voice, the louder I will sing’
