Q&A Polo
First of all, tell us about yourself, who are you and what do you do?
Dan: Polo are an alternative pop trio based in Leeds, Uk. We make wibbly-wobbly pop whoppers.
Why did you choose to become a musician/songwriter?
Dan: This might sound corny, but it didn’t really feel like a choice, from when I started playing at aged 15 it’s all I ever wanted to do.
As a young musician/songwriter, who were some of your biggest inspirations?
Dan: I feel like when people are asked this question they always miss out the ‘less cool/credible’ parts of their musical development. I was obsessed with Avril Lavigne for a long time, and I know that Luke also lived through the identical obsession… so this goes out to you Avril.
What do you feel is your biggest achievement in music so far?
We sold out our home town show in York in March, that was a pretty special moment. The venue was actually above capacity and there was a real atmosphere. We also got to share the stage with some good friends, it was a night to remember.
What are your biggest aspirations within the music industry?
Luke: Having the freedom to work creatively in any capacity without someone telling you how to do it better. There are two stages of a creative; Firstly, everyone tells you what to do it and how it’s done. Second, when you reach this stage, everyone is asking you how it’s done. Not many people get to stage two.
If you could go back and give yourself one piece of advice as a young musician/songwriter, what would it be and why?
Luke: Do it earlier.
Why is music education so important?
Luke: My entire career has been driven by my perennial belief in the good of music education. Music was my safe space and my community all through my young life, and was a vehicle for me to learn creatively. I’ve actually written two dissertations on this, so I couldn’t possibly condense my answer, because I have so much to say. I won’t put my findings here either, as I am not that self important.
