Q&A: The Noise and The Naive
First of all, tell us about yourself, who are you and what do you do?
We’re the Noise & the Naive, we’re 2, we’re French, we work in video games, we make our own yoghurts and we play punk music.
Why did you choose to become a musician/songwriter?
[Anne] I don’t think it was a choice but a natural necessity, we both had to play. We played in different bands a long long time ago, but then we let work and life come in the way. We started the Noise & the Naive 2,5 years ago: we were at a Shonen Knife gig and we simply felt this urge to play music again and to have the same fun and energy SK were showing on stage.
As a young musician/songwriter, who were some of your biggest inspirations?
[Anne] I started playing the drums completely ignorant, without any idols to look up to. Now I love watching other drummers especially when they’re younger than me and 10 times more talented! As for singing, I never thought I would sing one day but as a teenager I used to scream to my favourite L7 tunes in my room which probably helped with the development of my lungs.
What do you feel is your biggest achievement in music so far?
[Anne] Better articulating my English so that my British friend Duncan can sing along the correct lyrics of Wasabi.
What are your biggest aspirations within the music industry?
[Anne] Keep playing with the same joy and energy until I’m 95.
If you could go back and give yourself one piece of advice as a young musician/songwriter, what would it be and why?
[Anne] As PaRappa the Rapper says: “I gotta believe!”.
Why is music education so important?
[Anne] Music is the only constant in my life and one I found makes me profoundly happy. I could have missed it if it wasn’t for that music school at the bottom of my street that gave me my first drumming lessons 25 years ago and the confidence to play with a band.
